20th Anniversary Commission

Thank you to all of those who have supported our efforts in raising funds for our 20th Anniversary Commission. We are thrilled that we have met our fundraising goal to commission a piece to help honor our friend and founding member Dr. Robert Doan. We have chosen composer Carl Holmquist to pen this soon to be titled work that will be premiered at our 20th Anniversary Celebration Concert on May 4th.

Dr. Robert Doan was a founding member of the Plymouth Concert Band, performing with the ensemble for 19 years.  Dr. Bob, as he was known to his many friends in the band, began playing the clarinet and bass clarinet again at age 70 after his retirement from his work as a physician.  Music was always a part of Bob’s life, as he was known to sing to his patients.  His work as a physician impacted many, many people and his reputation was one of a caring and thoughtful practitioner.  Starting to play an instrument again after a roughly 50 year hiatus is a daunting task.  Bob pursued the instrument with vigor, working daily to become a very fine clarinet and bass clarinet player.  He performed with the Plymouth Concert Band, the Synod Senior Band, and various ensembles at the Wayzata Community Church.  Bob’s love of music was contagious, as he led the PCB clarinet ensemble, lovingly known as the Doan Tones.  Bob passed away in July of 2017.  We honor Dr. Robert Doan, and the PCB’s 20th Anniversary with a newly commissioned work by Carl Holmquist.
